in May when seniors must
face the job(less) situation.Although employment prospects for job applicants in
education look good this year, the job market for most
other areas is totally unpredictable, according to the
directors of the two university placement services.
"This year is an exceptional year for people graduat-
ing in May and in the summer," reported Robert D. Jen-
kins, director of the Placement Service, which handles
placement for education and related area job appli-
cants.
John M. Brooks, director of the Business Employ-
ment Service, said, "To forecast the labor market is
very difficult. There are just too many variables."
Brooks said that in times of vice-presidential resigna-
tions, cries for impeachment of the President and seri-
ous energy shortages, "There is no way we can predictthe job market with any degree of certainty."
If the energy shortage continues, a recession and a
very poor job market might be the result. On the other
hand, if industry begins extensive work to develop new
energy sources, it might spur the economy and
improve the job market, he said.
The Business Employment Service offers placement
service for students going into business, industry or
government, regardless of their major, Brooks said.
The "exceptional year" predicted by Jenkins for
education will result from a new retirement plan, the
Five Year Plan, for members of the Texas State Teach-
ers Retirement System. The plan becomes effective at
the end of this school year and will allow educators to
