Mauresrno captures
Australian Open
By Arnold Wayne Jones Staff Writer
Being an openly gay professional athlete is
still a rarity — no American man, for instance,
has ever come out while an active member of a
major professional team like baseball or football.
But if there's one sport where coming out does-
n't have to be the death knell for a career, it's
women's tennis.
In addition to Martina and Billie Jean — or for
that matter Dana, the fictional tennis pro on "The
L Word" — one of the world's top players for
seven years has been open about her orientation.
French player Amelie Mauresmo nonchalantly
came out as lesbian in a 1999 interview, chatting
about her girlfriend, Sylvie Bourdon.. Five years
later, she was ranked the number one female net-
ter in the world.
She did so, however, without claiming a
Grand Slam victory.
But her drought
ended last week. On
Jan. 27, Mauresmo won
the Australian Open by
defeating Belgian
Justine Henin-Hardenne
in straight sets.
Mauresmo nearly
swept the first set, winning IH1. She was ahead
2-0 in the second set: when Henin-Hardenne
retired for health reasons.
Mauresmo has the dubious distinction of hav-
ing waited longer than anyone other than Jana
Novotna for a Grand Slam victory. It took her
seven years and 32 tournament appearances
before taking home the trophy. This is only the
second time Mauresmo has reached the final in a
major tournament. She also played for the title in
the 1999 Australian Open, but fell to Martina
Hengis.
"It's been such a long time, and yet I still don't
know what to say," Mauresmo said in a post-
match press conference. "All the people that still
believed in me, after seven years it's a long time.
Not only myself, but people who're working
with me, believed me and pushed me, even when
I was down."
Ready for some football?
The Super Bowl is less a game than national
event. Even those who don't follow sports get

caught up in the gridiron match-up that pits the
best American Football Conference team against
the National Football Conference leader. (Even
Ellen DeGeneres, admittedly ignorant when it
comes to the sport, has
been predicting — accu-
rately — the winners on
her daytime talk show.)
On Sunday, countless
millions will tune in to
Super Bowl XL to see
whether the Seattle
Seahawks can convert
their team's first appearance in the championship
into a win, or whether the Pittsburgh Steelers —
who dominated the games in the 1970s — can
walk away the victors. (The last time the Steelers
won, the Seahawks were an expansion team with
only three seasons' experience.)
Local bars, including Buddies II, Woody's
Video & Sports Bar, Sue Ellen's and Rocket Bar,
will hold watching parties.
So is the Dallas chapter of Men of All Colors
Together, and they'll also be doing
some good for the AIDS Services
of Dallas food pantry. For a $3
cover, football fans can watch
the showdown and enjoy a chili
dinner. A cash bar will be avail-
able as well. Guests can contribute
to the pantry by bringing canned
goods.

$3. Super Bowl XL airs at 5:30
p.m. on ABC, Channel 8.
