Jimmie Tucker is co-chair of the Dallas chapter of the National Leather Association and has
been nominated for the Woman of the Year Award to be presented next month during Pantheon
of Leather XVI in Chicago.
How did you get involved with the National Leather Association?
Alout eight or nine years ago, I heard about the organization from some friends, and it sound-
ed like something I would be interested in. I started out by attending Beyond Vanilla, a educa-
tional workshop on the BDSM lifestyle that NLA holds each year. Four or five years later, I ran
for a member at-large position on the board. Then the female co-chair at the time resigned, and
I thought I would run for the seat, just to try it out. Now I am in my third year as co-chair. You
can only serve two two-year terms, so this is it for me.
What ■?) you plan to do when your term is up?
The leather community has several big events every year. South Plains Leatherfest happens
eacl^ear in late February, and Beyond Vanilla is in October every year. I was co-director of
Beyond Vanilla one year, and assistant director one year. I am sure I can keep busy helping plan
and organize those events.
WHST does it mean to you to be nominated for Woman of the Year?
It's always such an honor to be nominated because it means that someone thinks enough of
you to put your name in and that your work in the community has been recognized. The
Pantheon of Leather awards are kind of like the Academy Awards of the leather world.
What is the one thing you wish more people knew about the leather community?
we really are just like anybody else, when you get right down to it. As gay people, we
know what it's like to be discriminated against because you're different. So the gay communi-
ty, of all people should be the last ones to discriminate against someone else.
Where do you work?
I am a computer programmer for JC Penney. I've been with the company for 15 years and it
is a great place to work. It has great policies and we just started a GLBT employee group.
Soundout is a weekly column featuring people whose jobs and interests have an impact on the daily lives of members
