My Dearest Love,
I am in the committee Room, and no other member has yet come,
so that I have a moment to write. Would that I had a day, I could well
employ my time. I trust by this time you have received letters enough
to convince you, that I am not forgetful of you, & Sam. My thoughts
are of you, and with you every hour of my life. Not only waking, but
sleeping. Home with you, log cabbin as it is, is endeared to me far
beyond all the earth beside. In writing, I think of many things, which
I could tell you of, were I with you, which I can not write, some
political, and some personal, none of which I feel sure, would be
distressing to you.
Calls are made upon me, or allusions every day to the subject of
the next Presidency, and again I declare to you, if I could command
the station, (if I know my own heart) I would not be willing to accept
the Situation. Thus you see my dear, I am more in love, with your
Dear Society, and presence, than with earthly honors. They have no
charms for me, when they would call my time off, from you & Sam.
The office of President, will be a thorny path, to those who are confined
to it. I would deplore my absence, and distance from you, if it
would do any good. I must, painful as it is, bide my time. There is at
this time, a national fair, here for the purpose of exhibiting manufac84:
