OPERATIONS
Section I. STANDARD OPERATIONS-GENERAL
21. PROVOST MARSHAL'S OFFICE. a. The provost
marshal is responsible for the activities of the military police
under his supervision or command. Normally, his office is
organized to provide for adequate supervision and coordina-
tion of military police activities such as normal police du-
ties, traffic control, and security of installations. Provision
is also made for the administration of the office, for the
supervision of criminal investigation, and for the training
and inspection of military police units. The number of
officers required for the operation of the office is determined
by the scope of the activities and the necessary administra-
tive functions of the office.
b. In communities where the military police detach-
ment is relatively small, the principal administrative assist-
ant of the provost marshal is the provost sergeant, who is
responsible for such administrative functions as the main-
tenance of necessary provost records, including correspond-
ence with other units and agencies, policy files, criminal in-
vestigation files, and reports to higher authority. The
provost sergeant is assisted by such provost clerks as may
be required.
c. Where sufficient officer personnel is available, an offi-
cer, called the "duty officer," is designated by the provost
marshal. During his tour of duty, the duty officer super-
vises the activities of the several operating sections of the
military police unit, such as foot patrols, train details, crim-
inal investigators, and traffic control personnel assigned to
escort military convoys. (See fig. 3.)19
