PICTURES OF REAL LIFE
One of the most colorful features of
18th and 19th century life in London was
the endless variety of street peddlers who
roamed that bustling metropolis hawking
their wares. This activity became known
as "London Cries" because these street
vendors would walk around town "crying
out" or verbally pitching their goods
and services to potential customers.
This activity has been extensively
chronicled in books and articles. John
Marshall, the renowned publisher of
children's books brought out a miniature
2 volume edition of A Description of the
Cries of London about 1802. MBN 39
has an article about this rare edition.
MBN 51 has a write-up about a similar 2
volume edition entitled The Cries of
London, with Suitable Cuts. Published
aroundi1810, it was printed and sold by R.
Harrild of Great Eastcheap. This unusual
item was no doubt published to appeal to
children because of its small size.
Comes now a very similar kind of
miniature book to Harrild's Cries, alsobrought out by R. Harrild. This work is
also a 2 volume set, entitled Pictures of
Real Life, For Children and comes in
the same size (2 inches by 13/4") as
Cries. Both items are from your editor's
collection.
Although there is no date on the title
page, we must assume that Pictures of
Real Life was published around 1810 as
well.
Still in its original boards, volume one
of Real Life contains about 50 unnumbered
pages with a one page
"chapter" description on the right hand
side and an appropriate full page "elegant
cut" on the left. The chapter/scenes are
as follows:
See-Sawing
The Painter
Poor Towser
The Farmer
Cricket
Skipping
Sewing
Hoop
Feeding Chickens
Shuttlecock
The PorterPICTURES
