Bible in 1953, to the design of Lynton
Lamb, to commemorate the beginning
of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.
They also produced a miniature replica
of the binding for this Coronation
Bible.
A copy of this elegant binding was
sold at Sotheby's in London in 1991,
and we will let the Sotheby description
do the talking:
o Sangorski and Sutcliffe-The Form
And Order Of The Service That Is
To Be Performed And The Ceremonies
That Are To Be Observed In The
Coronation Of Her Majesty Queen
Elizabeth H, limited to 2000 copies,
of which this is one of 4 specially
bound, printed in red and black, portrait
frontispiece of the Queen,
contemporary red morocco gilt, covers
with eight horizontal bands of five
gilt or blind fillets, some intersecting,
continuing onto the inside edges,
overall decoration in gilt and blind
of monogram ER and a crown, white
morocco lozenge tooled in gilt with
the date and crowned cipher EIIR
onlaid at centre of upper cover, EIIRrepeated on the lower cover with
a central monogram of SB, the spine
in seven gilt and blind ruled
compartments with title and date,
vellum doublures and endpapers,
gilt lettering on the upper doublure,
gilt edges, fitted case, by Sangorski
and Sutcliffe, 64mm. by 45mm.,
Worcester, Achille J. St. Onge, 1953.
This binding is one of only four replicas
in miniature of that designed by Lynton
Lamb for the Coronation Bible in
1953, each of the miniatures having
the binder's initials on the lower
cover as opposed to the arms of the
Oxford University Press. This copy
was bound by Stanley Bray, the others
by Edgar Turner, also the foreman
and forewoman at the bindery for
their own amusement. None were
for sale. Twenty-five copies of the
Coronation Bible were printed on
India paper and bound by Sangorski
and Sutcliffe, some with the royal
cipher in the central lozenge as with
this miniature, others with the royal
coat of arms.
