AN APPARENTLY UNIQUE UNRECORDED
ISSUE OF THE EXCEPTIONALLY RARE FIRST
EDITION OF ONE OF THE FINEST MINIATURE
BOOKS.
The Gigantick Histories published and probably
written by Thomas Boreman are considered to be
some of "the most remarkable tiny books of the
(eighteenth ) century".(1) There were a total of ten
volumes published in this series between 1740 and
1743 and the series was notable from printing
names of juvenile subscribers. To the first volume
of Curiosities In the Tower of London there were
165 subscribers and the total number of books
subscribed for is 312 (thus providing an indication
of print-run). Each volume was available
separately.Wilbur M. Stone in his study and biblography of the
Gigantick Histories(2) notes that he only owns the
second edition of this title which "seems to have
been called for very soon after the original issue".
The text was re-set for the second edition. Copies
of the first edition are exceedingly rare (3) and
contain ONE FULL-PAGE WOODCUT OMITTED
FROM THE SECOND EDITION. In his
description of the title, Stone fails to mention this
unique plate (of a panther).
