Charleston Bliss
The 16th Grand Conclave of the Miniature Book
Societywill be held this year in Charleston, South Carolina
over the Labor Day Weekend, September 4-7. For those
of you who have not seen this area of the country and
especially Charleston, we strongly recommend you come
not only for the Conclave but to explore another world.
Charleston is arguably America's most beautifully
preserved city, and is one of the top ten most visited places
in America. If your interests are in architecture, history,
antiques, golf, beaches, shopping, eating, - this area has
it in abundance. The Conclave will be held at Charleston
Place, rated as one of the best hotels in the country. Your
hosts will be Jim DeLancey and Dean Gattone, strongly
assisted by Frank and Jeanette Anderson. Registration
information will be mailed later this spring.0
Notes from Frank Anderson
* The Miniature Book Exhibit is scheduled for display in
the Robert Scott Small Library of the College of
Charleston. The library will be open during the Conclave,
and it is within walking distance of the convention hotel.
* Frank J. Anderson invites the MBS membership
(collectors, printers, publishers, dealers, etc.) to send their
Conclave Keepsakes to him at the World Headquarters of
the Kitemaug Press at 229 Mohawk Drive, Spartanburg, SC
29301. One-hundred fifty (150) pieces are required. Any
surplus will be returned to the donor after the meeting. If
possible include your name on the keepsake so that people
will know who to thank. Cutoff date for the receipt of
keepsakes will be August 15, 1998.
* The Awards Committee Chairman this year is Frank J.
Anderson who solicits, and will very much appreciate,
members' suggestions as to who should receive awards.
* You may wish to inform geographically deprived
members that the Charleston of our Conclave site is in the
State of SOUTH Carolina.0
A TRIBUTE TO YVONN REZEK
Yvonne Rezek died on December 30, 1997. She
was one of the original sixty-one (61) charter members of
the Miniature Book Society back in 1983. In some
correspondence with Val Poska as early as 1987, she
related how she combined her love of travel with her deep
affection for miniature books, combining both in her motor
home, PEGASUS:
I call my Motor Home,
PEGASUS, after the Greek flying
horse who, if his hoof touched the
top of Mount Helicon, great streams
of inspiration would pour forth-and
I hoped it would happen to me.
There are windows around
the back and backsides and over
them I have built bookcases to look
like part of the window treatment
and in these I keep my miniature
books. For their sakes I have covers
for the cases which are opened only
to trusted eyes, double bolt locks and
an alarm system. I can't get
insurance while carrying them in a
Motor Home but what fun are they if
I can't enjoy and share them? One
of my biggest joys has been visiting
the mini book collectors and
publishers around the country.
I am anxious to get all my
books catalogued onto the computer,
accompanied with notes from every
resource I can find. (NOTE: she got
a new McIntosh and printer which
travels around with her.) I would
like to do the same for thousands of
other mini books. My only problemwill
I live long enough?
I wonder if you know
about this bit of trivia? I recently
received as a gift a beautiful tiny
scroll originated and bound by
Robert Massmann, calligraphed by
Helene Sherman, colored by Eloise
Massmann, signed by all the
Governors of the MBS and published
by Joseph Curran. It contained
congratulations and a list of the
names of the twenty-six people who
had attended the first three
Conclaves. What a nice keepsake
memorial it is ... ..
