turning backward, make* a gesture of defiance. Hiawatha cries,
"Not so long and wide the world la,
Not so rude end rough the way is,
But my wrath shall overtake you,
And my vengeance shall attain y&a!"^
Pau-Puk-Keewis runs
.Over rock and over river, ^
Thorough bush, and brake, and forest*
When he comes to a stream in the middle of the forest, he
discovers a &am made by the beavers. A beaver rises from the <
bottom of the stream, a^d yau-Puk-Keewis says,
"0 ay friend Ahtaeek, the beaver,
Cool and pleasant ia the water;
Let me dive into the water?
Let .Ho rest there In yourlod^es:
Chay.^c ia.e, too, into a. beaver^"'
The beaver replies that he will consult his companions*
Re sinka into the water. Sooii all of the beavers come to the
surface of the t"ater, and Pau-Pak-Keewis asks them to change
him into a beaver* The king of the beavers tells him to slide
into the water. As Pau-Pak-Keewia sinks into the water, his
clothing becomes black, and .his fox-tails and fringes chat'33
into a broad black tail. ThenPaR-PHk-Keewis says,
