Section 2: Motifs
References: Stith Thompson, Motif-Index of Folk-Literature, rev.
ed., 6 vols. (Copenhagen and Bloomington, 1955-1958); Earnest W.
Baughman, Type and Motif Index of the Folktales of England and
North America, Indiana Folklore Series No. 20 (The Hague, 1966).
Except for systematically inserted additions appropriate to English
and North American folk narrative, the motifs treated in Baughman
derive from Thompson's more inclusive Motif-Index. The bibliograph-
ical references to occurrences differ, Baughman's and Thompson's works
being complementary. Motifs which appear in Baughman are here
designated by a letter "B" following the motif number.
A plus mark (+) following the volume-and-page references for a
motif indicates that further references may be found immediately be-
low, cited in connection with more particularized forms (if provided
for) of the narrative element in question. Thus the references for
Motif A241 1.2, "Origin of color of bird," conclude with a "+" to
signify the presence, immediately below, of references for motifs
A241i1.2.1.6, "Color of crow," and A241 1.2.1.13, "Color of red-bird."
