According to Bala (1946),*2 the first thing teachers
should do is to teach students to discriminate and to evalu-
ate. The teacher should help the student to develop more '
varied and more critical standards of viewing a film.
In the field of hoBamaa-iag, attempts have been made to
set up criteria far evaluating films and to make thorough
recoaMendations fa# their use.
Mayer (194l)*3 in her study, "The Wse of Having Pic-
tures in Teaching First Sewing Techniques to Seventh grade
eirls," used educational films for the purpose of determin-
ing whether there is a saving of time and greater ease in
learning the techniques of beginning sewing through the use
of moving pictures. A moving picture of sewing was devel-
oped and the experimental and control groups were made com-
parable on the basis of intelligence, past experience, and
performance. Both groups ware provided with types of
teaching aids other than the films. The use of the film re-
sulted in a greater improvement la the quality of sewing and
