Criteria for testing the four indices were derived by
Jenss an! Souther from the following estimates of growth and
development* (1) during a nineteen- or twenty-month period
of observation beginning September, 1934, one pediatrician
observed 713 school children at six and again at seven years
of age; (8) the physician described each child's nutritional
status as "excellent," "good," "borderline," "poor," or "very
P°or": (3) at each examination the physician indicated
whether the child was in need of medical care, dental ere,
or both; (4) an anthropometrlat took eight measurements when
the annual physical examinations were made: and (5) each
child was. weighed at frequent intervals during the period
of observation.*^
Jenss and Souther used five provisional criteria, to ap-
praise the effectiveness of the four indices of body build.
Criterion 1 is based on clinical judgment of the child's
general nutritional status. Those children found to be poor
or very poor in general nutritional condition at seven years
of age were selected by this criterion. Criterion II in-
cluded those found to be poor or very poor at six and seven
years of age. Criterion 131 selected children who showed
unsatisfactory gain in weight, which was considered unsatis-
factory if his average was exceeded by ninety per cent of
the total included in the study. Criterion IV is based on
