DATA ON THEORETICAL METALLURGY.-VII
AF= -110,380--3.02 T log T+ 2.88X10-T2 + 11.16 T, (377)
AH298.1= -110,250; AF,9os.1= -109,020; AS~s8.1= -4.1.
It must be emphasized that these expressions may be considered only
as rough approximations.
THALLOUS SULPHIDE
No attempt is made to derive even approximate equations for the
heat and free energy of formation of T12S, as only very meager infor-
mation is available, heat-capacity data being entirely lacking. Thom-
sen (81, p. 1538) has measured the heat of formation at room tempera-
ture as AH=--19,650. This result has been recalculated and
AH= -21,480 obtained (82, p. 836). Approximate values of the free
energy of formation maybe computed. Bruner and Zawadski (14) give
4.5X 10-23 as the solubility product, corresponding to AF298.1=30,480
for the free energy of solution, a temperature correction being ignored.
Employing Lewis and Randall's (88) value of the free energy of for-
mation of T1+ (aq.), AF298.1= -7,760, and that of S-- (aq.), previously
derived in this bulletin, there results AF298.1= -22,540 for the free
energy of formation of TI2S. Ravitz (131) has adopted a virtually
identical result, AF0208.= --22,360. The solubility product from
Moser and Behr's (107) work as computed by Kolthoff (77),
K= 1.2 X 10-24 corresponds to AF29.1= -24,680, a temperature correc-
tion again being ignored.
TIN SULPHIDE
Britzke and Kapustinsky (11) and Jellinek and Zakowski (57) have
attempted measurements of reduction equilibria of SnS by H,. The
results obtained are very erratic; and, as no additional information
is available, it appears impossible to derive any thermodynamic values
from these measurements.
TUNGSTEN SULPH1DE
Parravano and Malquori (116) have determined equilibria in the
reaction WS2+2H2=W+2H2S between 1,068 and 1,3380. Nothing
is known concerning the specific heat of WS2. For the present purpose
it is estimated that AC,= -6.7 in the above reaction, and correspond-
ingly

P2H2S
in which K=P . The resulting calculations are shown in table 46.
