Information about the artist: Jean Carlu (May 3 1900, Bonnières-sur-Seine, France - Apr 22 1997, Nogent-sur-Marne, France). Carlu was born into a family of architects. Although planning to become an architect, at 18 Carlu had an accident that cost him his right arm. He went into graphic design and became known for his posters. He was heavily influenced by cubism, with its angular forms and spatial nuances. He worked for an advertising firm, and created posters and images that would become the fore-runners of today's trademarks and logos. Carlu spent World War II in the United States, and created a number of major poster designs aiding the war effort.
