CHEMICAL LITERATURE
Vol. 15, No. 2 .O Summer 1963
_@__z _ 1._ ~!_ _4' & d t .Ad 0_A SEXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING
Los Angeles, Calif. April 1, 1963
Members of the Committee present were:
Dean F. Gamble, Carleton C. Conrad, Barbara
M. Davis, Lee N. Starker, Eugene Garfield, and
Fred R. Whaley. Helen F. Ginsberg, Chairman
of the Committee on Chemical Documentation also
attended.
It was agreed to omit the reading of those reports
which had already been submitted in written
form and to accept the reports of the Secretary
and Treasurer.
In 1962, the Division had 888 members and
193 Associates, a total membership of 1081. This
is a decrease of 4% from the 1961 figure. It is
probably due to the fact that no dues reminders
were sent to "delinquents" in 1962. The total 1963
membership to date is 983, of which 806 are members
and 177 associates. The Membership Committee
will be instructed to send out dues reminders
to those who have not yet renewed.
The Treasurer, Dr. Garfield, had suggested
that it might be more economical both from the
point of view of time and money to bill members
for their Division dues for more than a one-year
period. It was voted to table this suggestion until
Dr. Conrad had an opportunity to discuss with
ACS headquarters the possibility of divisional
dues billing being handled through them.
The question of the Division's undertaking or
sponsoring projects was considered briefly but
no specific action was recommended. If such a
project were undertaken, an increase in dues
would probably be necessaryto finance the undertaking.
The question of projects was again raised
later in the meeting by Dr. Ginsberg, Chairman
of the Committee on Chemical Documentation,
this time concerning possible projects to be undertakenby
her committee. She agreed to bring
the question of projects before the membership
at the open meeting of the Committee on Chemical
Documentation, for their suggestions and
comments. She was most interested in a suggestion
already made that the Committee conduct
a study of documentation activities in other
divisions of the Society. This particular suggestion
will be aired at the forthcoming meeting
of the Divisional Officers Group.Dr. Gamble, Program Chairman for 1963,
reported on tentative plans for the Fall meeting
in New York. A one-half day tutorial session is
again planned. Another half-day session will
complete the updating of the earlier symposium
published as Advances in Chemistry Series 10;
"Literature Resources for Chemical Process Industries.
" Other half-day sessions will be devoted
to: a joint symposium with the Division of
Agricultural and Food Chemistry; a symposium
on patents; and on open meeting of the Committee
on Chemical Documentation. There will also
be a full-day symposium on systems design considerations,
and one day, possibly one and onehalf
days, of general papers.
Dr. Conrad, Program Chairman for 1964,
reported on possible programs for Philadelphia
in the Spring of that year. Two-half-day symposia
are presently planned, one on "Recent Advances
in Chemical Structure Storage and Searching
Systems" and the other on "Performance of
Large - Scale, Non - Conventional, Self - Service
Information Retrieval Systems. " A one-day symposium,
jointly sponsored by the Div is io n of
Chemical Marketing and Economics will cqver
"Information Problems in Chemical Marketing
and Economic Functions. "
Possible symposia under consideration for
the Chicago Meeting in Fall 1964 include: "Current
Awareness Systems for Chemical Literature"
(one-half day); "Methods of Handling Chemical,
Biological and Clinical Data" (one-half or
one full day, joint with Division of Medicinal
Chemistry); "Searching Organometallic Literature"
(one-half day).
When it was announced that the Program Committee
had not planned a tutorial session for the
Fall meeting in Chicago, a discussion ensued as
to the value of such sessions. It was agreed that
the question of tutorial sessions be thrown open
for discussion at the forthcoming open meeting
of the Committee on Chemical Documentation.
The resignation of the Chairman of the Section
Liaison Committee, Dr. Fred A. Tate, was
announced.
Mr. George F. Lewenz was announced as new
Chairman of the Titles of Papers Committee.
