and The Future of CPT." A 23 page booklet which
summarizes the papers presented has just been
published.
The past and present activities of the CPT were summarized
by Bryce Crawford, Jr., and Ernest Eliel, respectively.
The CPT's future is discussed from general
perspectives, as well as from six subject areas, including
chemical information. "Perspectives and
Criteria for Undergraduate Curriculum," presented by
Arleen Somerville, drew on results of the 1984 survey
of chemistry departments conducted by the CINF
Education Committee. Her paper described existing
difficulties that preclude effective information instruction,
suggested ways to remedy these difficulties,
and called for the CPT to take a more active role
in endorcing its chemical information instruction
guidelines.
ACS is sending copies to Chairmen of all college and
university chemistry departments. In addition, copies
are available to CINF Division members from:

PUTTING TECHNOLOGY TO WORK IN THE WORLD
OF CHEMICAL INFORMATION
MONDAY, JUNE 11, 1990
PITTSBURGH, PA
The Fourth Tri-Society Symposium on "Putting Technology
to Work in the World of Chemical Information,"
will be held in Pittsburgh June 11, 1990 in conjunction
with the 81st Special Libraries Association
Annual Conference. The symposium takes place
every four years and is sponsored by the American
Chemical Society (Division of Chemical Information),
the American Society for Information Science (Special
Interest Group on Biological and Chemical Information
Systems), and the Special Libraries Association
(Chemistry Division). Prior to the symposium on
Sunday afternoon, June 10, 1990, a field trip to the
Carnegie Mellon University Library is planned. The
Tri-Society Symposium is to take place Monday, June
11, 1990, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Furthermore, the materials
held by the Clearinghouse for Chemical Information
Instruction Material will be exhibited concurrently
with the afternoon session. A reception for the
symposium attendees, sponsored by Derwent, Inc.
and Questel, Inc., will follow.
Speakers from various segments of the information
community will review optical storage technology, artificial
intelligence and expert systems, computer-assisted
instruction tools for chemical information, the
impact of technology on collection building, current
awareness services, patent information services, and
numeric databases.
The specific papers to be presented are:
The Impact of New Technologies on the Role of
the Chemical Information Specialist. Anne
Rogers (The Dow Chemical Company).
Optical Disks and Imaging Technology at BP Research.
Kent Hill (B.P. Research).
Artificial Intelligence Applications in Chemistry.
