WHAT'S GOING ON?
(In Modern Texas Folklore)
WHAT'S GOING ON? is a collection of
essays by contemporary folklorists who are
writing about the customs and traditions
and the songs and the stories that are going
on now. They are describing the sights and
sounds that are so much a part of our lives
that sometimes we do not see them or hear
them. Or at least we take them for granted
as part of the commonplace, and they blend
into the landscape. But ordinary though
they may seem-these rodeos and chain let-
ters and bumper stickers-these things of
our culture-Neiman-Marcus and fat stock
shows and redneck rock-are what the Mar-
tian anthropologists would analyze us by-
gospel conventions and underground news-
papers and the Austin Enclave. So we will
seal this book in a time capsule, and the
people of the Tricentennial can read about
Jack Ruby and C-B radios and university
ghosts and backwoods beer busts, and may-
be they can understand us better, perhaps
even forgive us our trespasses.
