hen he turned 50, Robert
Patton, Regents Professor of
kinesiology, climbed Mount Kili-
manjaro. For his 60th birthday, he
and Wilson Street ('74, '76 M.B.A.)
bicycled across North America.
"I did it because I was turning
60," Patton says. "Every time I
reach a new decade, I take an
adventure."
For this adventure, Patton,
Street and almost 50 other cyclists
met in Everett, Wash., a suburb of
Seattle. Thirteen states and 4,200
miles later, the coast-to-coast trip
ended in Gloucester, Mass., out-
side of Boston.
Street, a marathon runner and
Dallas insurance agent, met Patton
and his wife, Elisa, through mara-
thon training runs sponsored by the
UNT faculty/staff fitness program.
"When he mentioned taking a
cross-country bike ride, I thought,
'That's a great idea,"' Street says.
"I thought, 'If Bob Patton can do
it, surely I can.'"'
And they did. Six days a week,
the group left around 7 a.m. and
rode about 80 miles until theyarrived at the next
destination, generally
around 4 p.m. There,
they met representa-
tives from Cycle Amer-
ica - the company
that organized the bike
tour - who trans-
ported their tents,
sleeping bags and
other personal items.
They camped on
public school grounds,
used the showers and
ate meals at the school
cafeteria. On their day
off, they repaired bikes,
did laundry, read and
enjoyed the sights.
"We always tried to
take our days off in fun
places, like Yellowstone
and Mount Rushmore,"
Patton says. "We ferried

Students approve recreation center
EARLY IN OCTOBER 2000, UNT students voted to approve
tIhe construction of a new recreation center at the Denton cam-
pus. Pending approval by the Texas Legislature, the center will
open for faculty, staff, students and alumni during the fall
semester of 2003.
Although the exact size and location of the building have not
ben determined, the center will have a health club atmosphere.
It will have a climbing wall, basketball and volleyball courts and
an indoor track.
The center will house rooms for aerobics, martial arts and
yoga. It will also have outdoor party decks with sand volleyball
courts, as well as two indoor pools -- one for leisure and one
for exercise.
In November, the Board of Regents selected F&S
Partners of Dallas as architect for the center. The
new center's construction is scheduled to begin the
sing semester of 2002.
Faculty, staff and alumni will be able to use the
iltities for an annual or per-semester fee, which
will be competitive with local fitness centers, says
Sue De mark, assistant dean and director of recre-
ational sports.
