cost of operation of a contracted vehicle is embodied in the
salary that the driver receives.
The writer, since he works in Distriot Four, was inter-
ested in the status of bus transportation of students in that
district, and set about to discover comparable advantages of
district-owned and contracted buses from the standpoint of
cost of operation, efficiency, and general satisfaction of
service rendered. His motive was to determine which of the
two types of buses would be the more advantageous for this
particular region of Texas.
Plan of Securing Data
To accomplish his purpose, the writer prepared a series
of three questionnaires, one of which he submitted to the
county superintendent of each county, and the other two he
submitted to the superintendent of each of the independent
school districts providing bus transportation for their
students. On his questionnaire, the county superintendent
recorded certain data pertaining to the common school dis-
trticts of his county taken as a whole, whereas the individual
school superintendent, on one of his blanks, reported informa-
tion for his district as a whole and on the other, supplied
data pertaining to each individual bus operating in his dis-
trict. These three forms are reproduced in the Appendix of
this study.
