iniverstly People-to-?eople, Inc. is giving an award of
;235.00 per person, to help defray costa of a tour to
lurope, to an ensemble whose identity merits the award,
or the judges may piece together an assemblage of musicians
from all groups. whose individual excellence warrants the
all-star concept. Engagements in Europe are now being
arranhed through the Univerasty People-to-People Program
and the Cread Jazz Festival Committee.
In addition to the above mentioned aspects, the ouartet
was also awarded a two week ernaereent at the :ew "fork world'ss
?air. :r. Phillip Jacka, who handled these arrangements, described
the additional prize as follows in hi letter of May 10, 196A,
to ,ir. iilhael 'olel, Tirector of Special Events, U.S. Commission,
Ne-. York W'orld's Fair:
One of the last-minute prizes given the small unit was
a two-week "send-off" enru9gement (at better than union
scale) at the Louisiana Pavilion's Jazzland. since that
group is tentatively sdt to embark on their tour abroad
June 28, projected playing date for that engagement is
for the two five-day-weeks embraced in June 17-25.
The quartet was told that this engagement would pay :500O.0
per man and that this money would cover whatever expenses we
would most likely incur while in Europe. Mike Bush, Chairman
of the Oread Jazz Festival, confirms this statement in his letter
of may 3, 1964, addressed to me. He says
I feel sure the 5~0,.0 each of you wins wil be more
than enough--coupled with eng memento in Europe--to take
care of any needs you might have while there.
hs3 statement is typical of what we were told by several persons
at ":e festival.
On the morning of April 26, 196A, Hisa Koaren Indall met
wrie: thea uartet to discuss the details of the European tour.
Also present at this meeting was 'r. Edward J. Soph who is the

letters were still being translated and tot she would let us

were assured that everything was in fine shape, that we would
have all the bookings we would want, and that the matter
would be completely settled and copies of the itinerary
