leciate Jazz Festival at No t r e
Dame University, the Lab Band
.fr,n NTSC will present its an-
rua Spring Jazz Concert in the
can Auditorium at NTSC Tues-
day at 8 pm.
Five groups - three large bands
arn two combos - will be pre-
s e ted during the concert. ANl
=aps are composed of students
I=.n North Texas. Featured mu-
sic will be original modern jazz
,cm-npositions and arrangements of
s :adard tunes by student com-
er - arrangers. The program
w::! be hig lighted by "Live Ster-
ce." Two bands will be-arranged
n either side of the stage simul-
a cously playing Duke Ellington's
'1:" a Mellow Tone."
!.eon Breeden, director of the
program, says it wi l be the
time the "Live Stereo" ef-
has been staged in Texas.'
other highlight of the p r o-
m will be the first public show-
Sothe giant "Sweepstakes"
_ ua won by the Lab Band
Notre Dame Festival. That.is, the trophy will be shown if it
arrives in Denton in time. The
group wasn't able to bring the
trophy home because the cup had
to be engraved, says Breeden, but
he has been notified the cup would
be in Denton in ume for the con-
cert. After the concert, the cup
will be on display in the Student
Union Building for one week, and
then wi be placed somewhere in
the Music Hall. The huge cup is
a traveling award, and the NT
Lab Band will return to Notre
Dame Festival next year to defend
the award. Any college winning
the cup three years in a row will
keep the cup permanently.
In addition to being named the
best group in any division at the
festival, the Lab Band won first
place in the big band category
competing against 28 other groups.
The band will travel to Detroit
this summer -is guests of the Jazz
Festival there, for winning the big
band honors. By invitation they will
also gd to the Inter - Collegiate
Festival at Georgetown Univer-
sity in Washington, D. C., May 7.
Judges at this festival will be
-azzmen Dave Brubeck and Paul
rDesmond and jazz journalist Wil-
lisConover.
Breeden terms the Tuesday
t concert a cross - section re-
1presentation of what the Lab
tBands are doing at North Texas.
rNo outside guests will be used,
says Breeden, "because we want0
azz Bands
Tuesday
the professionals to come and ls-
ten to us that night."
Proof that professionals just
might want to do that could be
found in the words of band leader
Stan Kenton, who presented the
Sweepstakes award at Notre
Dame. He described the Lab Band
as the most exciting band he had
heard in years.
The festival, with special men-
tion of tbe Lab Band, will be the
subject of an article in the April
28 edition of Downbeat magazine,
national music publication.
This will be the 13th annual
spring concert begun by Dr. Gene
Ball, who first organized the pro-
gram at North Texas. Dr. Hall
is now at Michigan State Uni-
versity.
In the program by the three
bands and two combos will be
about 50 students. The 2 o'clock
band, the 3 o'clock band and the
5 o'clock bands will be using sep-
arate musicians, except for some
duplication in the trombone sec-
tions.
Beginning the program with two
arrangements by ex-NT student
Mickey Tulh, will be the 18 piece
5 o'clock band (so named because
of rehearsal time).
The North Texas" Jazztet" will
follow with two arrangements by
leader Lanny Steele, and an origin-
al composition by graduate st u-
dent Morgan Powell. This nine
piece combo plays in a m o d e r n
jazz style.
The 17 piece 3 o'clock band, di-
rected by Powell, will follow with
arrangements by Dee Barton and
Tom Wirtel, and another original
by Powell.
The North Texas Quintet-will
,play three tunes, one of these ano-
ther Powell composition. Leader of
this group is drummer Paul
Guerrero, a graduate student who
returned to school this semester af-
er a long tour with Carmen Caval-
Rounding out .the program be-
re intermission will be the 18
piece 2 o'clock Lab Band, -the
group that won at Notre Dame.
They will-play arrangements by
tudents Lanny Steele, Bob Pick-
ng, Tom Wirtel, Larry Cansler
Jim Knight, and. also tw o
S bginays by Powe lL .
After intermission will come
extended arrangement by
eeden in "Live Stereo" of 'In a
yellow Tone." Breeden will also
t as emcee for the program.
Last year New Okleans disc
key Didck Martin acted as em-

jazz journalist Ira Gitler was
,and the year before NT.
Guiffre, now, a tgmodeern-jazz musician, was pre-
sented on the program.
