Graduate student Jannette
Akridge won the Stephen E. Dwornik
Award for the best student paper
presented at the 28th Annual Lunar
Planetary Science Conference spon-
sored by NASA and held in Houston.
The award consists of a plaque and
$500 and will be formally presented at
a reception at the next annual confer-
ence. Two awards are given for best
oral and poster presentations. Jannette
received her award for her poster
presentation on determining radiation
and temperature history of meteorites
using their thermoluminescence proper-
ties. The meteorites she studies are
found in the Antarctic. Jannette is a
second year student working for
Professor Paul H. Benoit.
Graduate student Charles S.
Henry received the Aubrey E. Harvey
Award from Sigma Xi in February.
This award is given to only one senior
graduate student in a campus-wide
competition involving all areas of
study. The award is based on the
quality of the student's graduate
research. Working with Professor
Ingrid Fritsch, Charles has construct-
ed, characterized and applied micro-
cavity electrode devices in analytical
chemistry. He will soon begin a post-
doctoral appointment at the University
of Kansas with Professor Susan Lunte.HEART O' TEXAJ

BAYLOR UNIVERSITY
Welch Professor Gordon Stone
presented an invited paper at the Dallas
ACS meeting at a symposium honoring
ACS award winner Dr. Herbert Kaesz
of UCLA. Dr. Stone was Dr. Kaesz's
Ph.D. mentor. Dr. Charles Garner has
been awarded a Welch grant.

MEETINC-IN-MINIATIURE
At the 31st Annual Meeting-in-
Miniature at Southern Methodist
University, April 18, forty-one presen-
tations were given (24 undergraduate
and 17 graduate) from seven area uni-
versities. The winning presentations were:
Undergaduate. First place, Greg
Adam, SMU; second place, Victoria
L. Jimenez, UTD; third place, Andrea
N. Lay, UNT; Honorable Mention,
John D. Davis, Texas Wesleyan.
Graduate. First place, Trinidad
Mufioz, Jr., UTD; second place,
Andrew A. Moxey, UTD; third place,
Xiou-yan Jiang, TCU; Honorable
Mention, Artie S. McKim, UNT; Hon-
orable Mention, Lisa Washmon, UTD.
The following students were given
$100 Awards by the DFW Section in
recognition of their outstanding scho-
