Dr. Herbert C. Brown from the De-
partment of Chemistry, Purdue Uni-
versity, was this year's guest lecturer
for the annual Gooch-Stephens Lecture
Series. Dr. Brown spoke on "Boranes in
Organic Chemistry" at 8 PM on October
10 and gave a second lecture on "Those
Remarkable Organoboranes" at 10:30
AM on October 11.
Seminar speakers for the month were:
Professor Minoru Tsutsui of A&M Uni-
versity, who spoke on "O-TT Rearrange-
ment of Organotransition Metals";
Mark Land of Baylor University, who
talked on "Determination of the Free
Volume Element in Polymers Above and
Below the Glass Transition"; Dr. Milton
Burton, Director Emeritus of the Radia-
tion Laboratory, University of Notre
Dame, spoke on "The History of Radia-
tion Chemistry."

Dr. Robert Schwartz, Research De-
partment, Pennzoil Company, attended
the Tenth International Symposium Ad-
vances in Chromatography in Munich,
Germany. He presented a paper entitled
"High Temperature Gas Liquid Chroma-
tography with a Polyphenyl Ether Sul-
fone." Co-authors were Roderic G.
Mathews, Research Department, Penn-
zoil Company, Shreveport, and S. Rama-
chandran, R. S. Henly and J. E. Doyle,
Applied Science Laboratories, Inc., State
College, Pennsylvania.

There are three new faculty members
in the Department of Biochemistry and
Molecular Biochemistry at the LSU
Medical School in Shreveport.
The three are: Michael Blackburn,
Ph.D., coming from the Department of
Molecular Biochemistry, University ofCalifornia in Berkeley, California.
Martin Banschbach, Ph.D., coming
from the Neurometabolism Section,
Waisman Center on Mental Retardation,
University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wis-
consin.
Lewis T. Graham, Jr., Ph.D., coming
from the Institute of Psychiatric Re-
search, Indiana University, School of
Medicine, Indianopolis, Indiana.
Centenary News
Dr. Wayne Hanson, Dr. Robert Hood
and Dr. Rosemary Seidler attended the
ACS Southeast- Southwest Regional
meeting in Memphis.
Dr. Charles Lowery attended the
Robert A. Welch Conference in Houston.
Dr. Wayne Hanson conducted meeting
in Lion, Illinois, for the chairmen-elect
of the large local sections at the local
sections officers conference.
On November 18th, Dr. Jack Thoma
of the University of Arkansas presided
over a seminar in the chemistry dept.
at Centenary College.
Dr. Robert Hood attended the 14th
annual ASTM meeting on the practice
of chromatography on the 6th of Oc-
tober.

Dr. Basil Gatsikis has received a three
year ACS Type G grant for research on
Porphyrin Complexes of the Rare
Earths.
Two undergraduate students, Larry
Jones and Mike Daniels, participated
in University of New Orleans under-
graduate research participation program.
