Hoffmann, Heinrich, 1885-1957.
Heinrich Hoffmann, born October 12, 1885 in Fürth, Germany, died December 11, 1957, Munich, Germany. German photographer best known as Adolf Hitler's official photographer. Hoffmann married Therese Nelly Baumann in 1911. A daughter, Henriette, was born in 1913, and a son, Henrich, in 1916. Hoffmann joined the NSDAP in 1920, and was chosen by Adolf Hitler as the official photographer. Hoffman became a close friend of Hitler, and it was through Hoffmann that Hitler met Eva Braun, who was an assistant in Hoffmann's Munich studio. Hoffmann's wife Therese died unexpectedly in 1928. Hoffmann wrote many propaganda books illustrated with his photographs, many of which had introductions written by Reichsjugendführer Baldur von Schirach, who married Hoffmann's daughter in 1932. At the end of the war, Hoffmann was sentenced to 4 years for Nazi profiteering. After his release, he returned to Munich, where he lived until his death in 1957 at the age of 72. A large part of his archives of photographs was seized by the United States forces, and is now in the National Archives. |

| Note: |
As part of fund-raising campaigns, these miniature volumes, called "button books" were produced. Contributors to the funds were given copies of these books, which had a string threaded through a hole in the back cover, by which the books could be hung from coat buttons. The various types of volumes produced included information on the campaigns of the war, activities of Hitler, etc. This particular copy was formerly in the collection of Robert E. Massmann, noted publisher and collector of miniature books. His miniature bookplate is inside the front cover. |
