Ret.), Director of Veterans' Affairs on
the UTA campus. The grant is funded
by the Veterans' Cost of Instruction
Program (VCIP), and is for the purpose
of remedying deficiencies in the basic
chemical background information of vet-
erans whose scientific education was in-
terrupted by military service. Dr. A. T.
Armstrong and Miss Lynn Hardin of the
Chemistry Department faculty will direct
the new program which is expected to
be of value to a considerable number of
interested veterans.
Dr. Daniel Blake, Chemistry Depart-
ment Graduate Advisor, lists the follow-
ing new graduate students beginning
their work in the Department in the
spring semester: Grace Wu, Phi Ti
Nguyen, and Larry Hall.
Dr. Donald R. Martin has received a
$24,000 two-year renewal of his Robert
A. Welch Foundation grant. Subject of
his research is "Molecular Adducts and
Reactions of Boron Halides and Pseudo-
halides".
Dr. Andrew Ternay has received a
$20,000 two year renewal of his Robert
A. Welch Foundation grant. His research
is concerned with a study of alkylated
thioxanthenes.
Attending the Southwestern Regional
meeting at El Paso were Drs. Daniel
Blake and Tom Cogdell. Also in attend-
ance at the meeting was postdoctorate
Dr. Michael L. Denniston.
Dr. Mary Lynn Johnson presented a
seminar to the Chemistry Department
of the University of Houston on January
25th. Title of the seminar was "The Air
Pollution Potential of New Energy
Sources". Dr. Johnson will be listed in
the new edition of Who's Who of Ameri-
can Women and in American Men and
Women of Science.
Dr. O. A. Battista, Vice President for
Science and Technology, Avicon, Inc. of
Fort Worth, gave a lecture in January
to the students who are enrolled in the
Chemistry Department's new polymer
chemistry course. The junior level course,
inaugurated this spring semester, is
being organized and taught by Dr. Mar-
garet C. Willoughby. Dr. Battista's lec-ture was concerned with new micro-
crystalline polymers which he has de-
veloped and which show great promise
in many medical and cosmetic applica-
tions.
Dr. Andrew Ternay has been elected
Chairman pro tempora of the UTA
Graduate Assembly. He is also Chemistry
Department Chairman of the Graduate
Studies Committee, which has been
newly formed after the dissolution of
the College of Science Graduate Studies
Committee.
At 8 P.M. on February 26th, UTA
hosted a Robert A. Welch Foundation
lecture presented by Dr. M. Kent Wilson.
The lecture was jointly sponsored by the
UTA Chapter of The Society of the
Sigma Xi. Dr. Wilson has been head of
the Chemistry Section of the National
Science Foundation since 1966, having
formerly been associated with Harvard,
Tufts, and King's College.
Dr. Margaret Willoughby has been
selected to present a vita for publication
in the new conceived Who's Who in
Texas to be published in 1974 by the
United States Public Relations Service.
Mrs. Ann Benham served as a panel
discussion leader in the newly establish-
ed Workshop for Graduate Teaching
Assistants on the UTA campus. The
Workshop scheduled a series of meetings
during the spring semester registration
period.
A UTA graduate seminar was pres-
ented in December by Dr. Dennis Deven-
port, postdoctorate at UTA. Title of the
seminar "Lanthanide Shift Reagents".
