Table 10 do not Indicate that broken home*, working mothers,
and extended families produce conditions augmenting readi-
ness for reading^ but rather that these children toy reason
of their Biental abilities were able to stake outstanding
records. It is possible that they could have made greater
achievement under different circumstances* Wheeler .says,
"There Is probably greater reading retardation among the
mentally superior than among the mentally dull students.*3
He reasons that this retardation is harder to detect and is
usually not known*
