ethnicity and first generation status on academic motivation and success. Ethnic
minority status appears to be a risk factor in the area of academic achievement. For
example, the Chronicle of Higher Education Almanac (2007) noted that 57% of Hispanic
students enrolled in a 4-year university did not graduate within six years. As previously
noted, for ethnic minority students, the ability to identify with the university culturally is
also an important factor to college adaptation. Factors related to "fitting in" could
significantly impact academic motivation and success for ethnic minority students.61
