Prepare thyself, Zion (Christmas Oratorio) Bach
Che faro senza Euridice (Orfeo) Gluck
Orpheus has succeeded in persuading Eros, the goddess of love,
to aid him in bringing his wife, Euridice, back from the Elysian
fields, but only on condition that he will not look at her during
their journey. He takes her by the hand and leads her away. She
is wounded by his apparent coldness, and he finally yields to
temptation and clasps her in his arms. She dies at his feet, and
he sings his poignant aria, "What will I do without Euridice ?"

In der Fremde . .... . . . ............. Brahms
From the distance, from my native land, the clouds come up be-
hind the red lightning. But father and mother have long since
died, and no one knows me there. How soon comes the quiet time;
over me rushes the beautiful forest loneliness-and no one knows
me here.
In dem Schatten meiner Locken .......... . .. Brahms
In the shade of my locks sleeps my beloved. Shall I waken him?
Oh, no! Often must I listen to his grieving as he longs for my
brown cheeks that take and give him life. He calls me his "little
snake"-and still I allow him to sleep in my arms! Shall I awaken
him? Oh, no!
Die Nacht ..... .. . . ..... . Strauss
Out of the forest creeps the night. It steals the color from the
flowers, the silver from the streams, the gold from the gilded
towers. Come nearer!-the night frightens me, and snatches you
from me.
Die Verschwiegenen . . Strauss
To all the flowers I have told how much you have hurt me; I mur-
mured to the violet, 1 shouted to the rose and the beautiful
camellia. But do not fear-be gay and cheerful. Those who know
are all dead, and cannot tell anyone else.
