Dr. Ana Cleveland is now the Facilitator
for the SLIS Houston Program and will serve
as advisor to all students in the General
Practice Program.
Dr. Elizabeth Figa received a $15,000 TIF
grant to work on a digital storytelling project.
Big news about Dr. Sam Hastings! She has
been elected as president-elect of the
American Society for Information Science &
Technology. This is a great honor for her and
for SLIS. And in addition, in the spring she
was named a UNT Honor Professor.
Dr. Hastings presented two papers at the
Museum Computer Network conference in
Toronto, September 4-7: "3D Imaging
Research" and "Digital Image Management
Programs of Study at the University of North
Texas." Four IMLS Fellows also presented at
the conference: Jo Glenny, "Anatomy of a
Prototype: Wireless Webcam for Museum
Interaction;" Vika Kravchyna, "Informational
Value of Museum Websites;" Elise Lewis,
"User Preferences for 3D Image
Manipulation;" and Robin Bartoletti, "Users
as Design Partners in the Sepia Photo
Archives Database Design."
Dr. Sam Hastings co-authored two recent
publications: with Daniel Gelaw and Cathy
Hartman "A Metadata Approach to
Preservation of Digital Resources: The University
of North Texas Libraries Experience," First
Monday 7 (8) August 2002, www.firstmonday.org/
issues/issue7_8/alemneh/index/html; and with
Victoria Kravchyna "Informational Value of
Museum Web Sites," First Monday, 7 (2)
February 2002, www.firstmonday.org.issues.
issue7_2/kravchyna/index.html/ She also pre-
sented a paper with Eva Poole on the public
scanning station at Denton Public Library at
the Texas Association of Museums in Lubbock,
April 11, 2002.
Dr. Shawne Miksa is currently putting
the research started in her dissertation, a co-
citation analysis of two research groups from
the 1950s and 1960s-one did classification
research and the other information retrieval
research-to find out how these two areas of
study in LIS became divided. The next step is
to find out why the division occurred. Shefeels this is an important study because it
looks at a somewhat forgotten era in LIS dur-
ing which some very important advancements
were made. Dr. Miksa states that "this in turn
will provide insights for the future of the field
as it could potentially help us to stop 're-invent-
ing the wheel' when it comes to organization
and retrieval of information in IR systems."
Dr. William Moen has concluded two
major research studies and continues work on
others. The Illinois Library Automation in
the Networked Environment study, completed
at the end of September, was the topic of his
presentation at the Illinois Library
Association Annual Conference in Chicago
on September 25. The TIF-funded Needs
Assessment of Academic, Public, and School
Libraries study, also concluded at the end of
September, will assist the TIF Board's Library
Working Group as they develop grant pro-
grams for the next two years. His work on the
Library of Texas study for the Texas State
Library and Archives Commission, now in its
final phase, resulted in two articles about the
project and virtual libraries that appear in the
fall 2002 issue of Texas Library Journal: "A
Service-Based Approach for Virtual Libraries,"
and "Designing and Demonstrating a
Resource Discovery Service for the Library of
Texas." Both articles were co-authored with
Kathleen R: Murray, an associate fellow of the
Texas Center for Digital Knowledge and proj-
ect manager for the ZLOT Project.
Drs. Carol Simpson and Elizabeth Figa will
teach classes next summer in Chiang Rai
Thailand. Dr. Figa will be teaching storytelling
with an emphasis on Southeast Asian stories.
Dr. Simpson recently spent two weeks in
Thailand in preparing for a project that also
will take place in summer 2003. She will be
working with the Chiang Rai Montessori
School to update their library catalog and pre-
pare a collection map and collection develop-
ment plan. The school has a grant to expand its
library into a joint school/community library.
Dr. Herman Totten completed his year as
Texas Library Association President with a
highly successful conference in Dallas, April
23-26, attended by almost 7,000.O
