EditorM Yi ames Dean forSLIS
Dr. Philip M. Turner from the University of Alabama has been named the new
dean of SLIS. The announcement concludes a year long national search to fill the
position. Dr. Turner will begin work September 1.
In addition to his role as dean, Dr. Turner will serve as associate vice president of
academic affairs for distance education at UNT. He also will chair the University's
Information Resource Council, a campus-wide group that examines communica-
tion and technology needs and makes recommendations to address those needs.
Dr. Blaine Brownell, University Provost, believes Dr. Turner's experience at Ala-
bama makes him an ideal choice to fill these important posts at UNT. He has spent
the past five years building the distance learning program at the University of
Alabama from two sites to 25. "Given the importance of UNT's programs in
library and information sciences and its future distance education opportunities,
Phil Turner will be a most welcome addition to this University," Brownell said.
"In my view, North Texas is the perfect arena for his considerable talents and
experience, and I eagerly look forward to working with him."
In 1988, Dr. Turner was named dean of the School of Library and Information
Studies at Alabama, where he had taught since 1977. He also serves as assistant
vice chancellor of academic affairs of the University of Alabama system, a posi-
tion he has held since 1991. He holds master's degrees from the University of
Wisconsin LaCrosse and East Texas State University and a doctoral degree from
ETSU.
Dr. Turner has more than 50 books and articles to his credit, including the book
Helping Teachers Teach: A School Library/Media Specialists's Role and an ar-
ticle entitled "Goodbye to Ivory Towers" in the upcoming fall issue of Planning
for Higher Education. Among his many awards are the Outstanding Commitment
to Teaching Award from the University of Alabama National Alumni Association
and the Award for Teaching Excellence from the University of Alabama College
for Continuing Studies. He was only the second academic ever to win the Annual
Award for Achievement in Managing Information Technology from Carnegie
Mellon University and American Management Systems. He recently received a
Distinguished Service Award from the Alabama Library Association.
