since 1956, Pro-
" ":;.":"' :' ): fessor Nichols
_ De Tc i has earned a nat-
i Gl ional reputation
as a prominent
educator in reference services and government
documents. She has been described as "a living
example to generations of students that success comes
only from exceptional dedication and effort," and for
many Texas librarians her name is synonymous with
high quality reference services. She has presented over
180 workshops for public, academic, school, and
special librarians at the state and national levels. At
the 1987 conference of the American Library
Association, the name of Margaret I. Nichols was
included on the Library Education Centennial Honor
Roll in recognition of individuals "who have made
significant contributions to education for the pro-
fession." The Student Government Association at the
University of North Texas has twice honored her with
its Distinguished Teaching Award, first in 1973 and
most recently at the University's honors convocation in
April of 1991.
In 1990 the Texas Library Association awarded herits highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award,
presented only twelve times in 30 years. President of
TLA for 1984-1985, she currently serves as the Assoc-
iation's Councilor to the American Library Association
and is a member of the TLA Executive Board.
Professor Nichols' numerous publications include
Current Texas Reference Sources, Selecting and Using
a Core Reference Collection, and Handbook of Ref-
erence Sources and Services for Small and Medium-Sized Libraries.
Rocking chairs and comforters won't be a part of
Margaret Irby Nichols' life in retirement. She is
currently hard at work on the 4th edition of Reference
Books for School Media Centers, to be published by
Libraries Unlimited in 1992, and has another book
contract pending. She'll be back on campus in the
spring of 1992 to teach SLIS 5110, Seminar in
Information Resources and Services, and her calendar
of continuing educational activities includes workshops
within Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri.
In short, Margaret Irby Nichols will continue to be
what she has always been -- steadfast in her dedica-
tion to the development of librarianship in Texas as a
library educator, as an active member of the
profession, and as an author.
