"Build the Future with Books"
"Through Books children come to uhderstand the tradition of our Nation
and to value the long struggle of their ancestors for freedom and opportunity
for all people. Books also broaden their sympathies with-people of other
arind and cultures, thus making it possible -for them to see this global war
in proper perspective. Through raading they are preparing themselves to
become the builders of a free world," sa s Katharine F. Lenroot, Chief of
the Children's Bureau, U.S. Department of Labor.
November 14-20 is Children's Book Week. Although Book Week focuses atten-
tion on Children's books for just seven days, one of the purposes has al-
ways been that public enthupiasms and energies aroused should spread through-.
out the y6ar, The first purpose is to encourage the love of book and read-
ing in boys and girls. With such love for books it is hoped that ownership
and attendant companionship of'books may play their parts in the development
-~d maintenance of the family.' To accomplish this, a true understanding of
obildren and wide and real knowledge of books are requisite.
Children's Book Week, although it is set in motion by adults and come.s
in - most critical year, retains its "accent on youth." It is above all
e!,, observance in which children will share. It is a gay and imaginative
ru *. Let it diramratie - the contribution that books make to growing up 1
