SIZE OF MINE AND PERIOD OF OPERATION
41
mines were in operation during the year. It will be seen that 31 per
cent of the mines, employing 72 per cent of the men, were in operation
300 or more days during 1927. The death rates are usually lower for
those mines that were in operation the longest period of time during
the year.
The information contained in Tables 29, 30, and 31 and in similar
tables published in previous years indicates that large companies
operating full time usually have lower fatality rates than small
companies operating part time; also, that companies essentially equal
in size usually have lower accident rates when operating full time;
and again, that for any given period of operation, other things being
equal, the larger company has the advantage in keeping down its
accident rate.
