METAL-MINE ACCIDENTS IN THE UNITED STATES, 1927
39
ACCIDENT RATES BASED ON LENGTH OF WORKDAY
Most men working underground at metal mines are employed at
mines that have adopted eight hours as a standard day's work for
underground operations. This does not mean that every individual
at any given mine works eight hours a day, but rather that the mine,
as a whole, is operated on an 8-hour basis. Out of 67,560 men em-
ployed at mines whose reports could be included in a tabulation
according to length of shift, 59,379 were employed at 8-hour mines,
1,810 at 9-hour mines, and 3,141 at 10-hour mines. Reports for
3,230 men showed some other basis or else did not show the length
of shift. Table 27 shows the number of deaths and injuries at each
of these groups during 1927. The number of accidents per million
hours of exposure is shown in Table 28. It will be noted that the
lowest accident rate was for the 10-hour mines. Figures in the
table relate to all kinds of mines, and an examination of the operators'
reports reveals the fact that about two-thirds of the mines in the
10-hour group were iron mines. Reports for iron mines in recent
years have usually shown fewer accidents in proportion to the num-
ber of employees when compared with other kinds of mines, and the
fact that most of the mines in the 10-hour group were iron mines is
the principal reason for the comparatively low accident rate for the
10-hour group as a whole.
An encouraging faci revealed by the figures is the marked reduc-
tion in the accident-frequency rate at 8 and 9 hour mines during the
past three years.
