University Day
1988

University of North Texas
University Day 1988 was much like the first University
Day in 1962. A time capsule was buried in front of the
Administration Building, to be unearthed by the North
Texas president in 2015. Speakers extolled the accom-
plishments of the university. Important guests were
honored. Staff, faculty and students sang "Glory to the
Green" and the school fight song.
And in both years, everyone was celebrating a new
name. In 1962 it was the name North Texas State
University. This year it was the University of North Texas.
"Our university needed a new name that would more
accurately reflect the kind of university it has become,"
Chancellor Alfred Hurley told the 200 people gathered
in the shadow of the clock tower May 6.
Dr. Hurley honored guests that included Dr. Imogene
Bentley Dickey Mohat, dean of women in '62; Dr. James
J. Spurlock, vice president for academic affairs in '62;
and several officers of the '62 student government
organization, United Students of North Texas.
Green, helium-filled balloons were released, carrying
messages of the name change with them. And a "mini-
parade" marched from the Administration Building to
the campus entrance by Bruce Hall and the School of
Music, where the large, brick sign bearing the new name
was unveiled.
During the University Day celebration, Dr. James
Rogers, longtime member of the journalism faculty and
author of "The Story of North Texas," reflected on the
school's seven names during its 98-year history. He spoke
of the curfew bell, which called the students to their
studies in the school's years as a small teachers college,
as a tie to the school's past, a symbol of NT's history of
commitment to its students and to educational excellence.
"I've never known a university that cared more for
its students," Dr. Rogers said.
"If you listen carefully, maybe you can hear that old
normal bell ring for the University of North Texas," he
said. ...
