Steven Harlos made his solo debut at Lincoln Center in 1986, performing the Gershwin
Concerto in F. Known for his sensitivity as a collaborative artist, he has performed with
many artists of international stature, including Timofei Dokshutzer, Harvey Phillips, Erick
Friedman, and Gervase de Peyer. He holds degrees from Indiana University, the University
of Western Ontario and the University of Southern California. As a jazz pianist, he assisted
Dick Hyman in the first performances of the jazz ballet Piano Man with the Cleveland
Ballet, and subsequently performed the work both with the Cleveland and the San Jose
Ballet. He also performed Mr. Hyman's ballet The Bum 's Rush with the American Ballet
Theater at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. His compositions have been
published by Southern Music Company and Woodwindiana. An active musician in the
Dallas/Fort Worth area, he currently serves as staff keyboardist for the Dallas Symphony
Orchestra and chair of the Division of Keyboard Studies at the University of North Texas
in Denton, where he has taught since 1982.
Mark Houghton has performed as principal horn of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra
since 2005. Previously, he was principal horn of the Harrisburg and Phoenix symphony
orchestras. Dallas Morning News critic Scott Cantrell has written of Mr. Houghton: "He
had a tone of burnished elegance and amazing expressive range, and he delivered some
protracted decrescendos that took the breath away." The son of professional hornists,
Mark was raised in Keller, Texas. He earned a bachelor's degree from the Eastman
School of Music, studying horn with internationally acclaimed professor Peter Kurau.
Mr. Houghton has performed with the Eastman Virtuosi, Orion Septet, and Rochester
Philharmonic Orchestra, and toured nationally with the Eastman Wind Ensemble and
abroad with the Eastman Horn Choir and the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra. He has
performed as a soloist with the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra, Phoenix Symphony and
the Wichita Falls and Fort Worth symphony orchestras. He was a prizewinner in the
American Horn Competition and the International Horn Society's John Hawkins Memorial
Solo Competition. In addition, Mr. Houghton has been a performer and/or guest clinician
at Arizona State, University of Arizona, Baylor University, Texas Christian University,
University of Oklahoma, Texas Music Educators Association Convention, Texas Tech
University and Wichita State University.
Joe Sellmansberger resides in rural western Tennessee near Memphis and performs with
the IRIS Orchestra, Eroica Ensemble, Jackson Symphony, Mississippi Brass Quintet, and
New Orleans Jazz Ramblers. He has performed with the Memphis Symphony and Beale
Street Jazz Band. Joe and his wife Debbie repair, restore, and sell brass and woodwind
instruments under their three-decades moniker, Mid-South Music. Joe has built some
of his own tubas and has designed and markets a line of tuba mouthpieces (designed in
1976). He is known worldwide for his technical prowess in the repair and customizing of
brass instruments. Debbie embraces their log cabin existence with her spinning, weaving,
beekeeping, orchard cultivation, gardening, fishing, poultry, and venison dressing
endeavors, as well as her investment real estate dabblings and her festivals-related
enterprise, Celtic Corner.
