Rediscovery of the Elements -
The DVD "Rediscovery
of the Elements"will
allow one to visit-
either vicariously
through thousands of
pictures, or in reality
by following detailed
maps--every site
retainingg to the
i covery of all the
i cnical elements.
After 10 years research and travel by Jim
(Beta Eta 1971) and Jenny Marshall (Beta
Eta 2003), an extensively expanded
"Rediscovery of the Elements" will be available
in the near future in DVD format. The contents
will include:
* About 500 maps, both low and high reso-
lution, allowing accurate and precise navigation
to rediscovery sites.
* Over 5,000 photographs, allowing one to
experience a virtual complete tour of all sites.
All photographs will be accompanied by
detailed captions and text.
* Updated Discovery of the Elements (latest
version by the authors, 2002).
the Grand Tour
* Complete table (60 pages) of all rediscov-
ery sites, with full historical descriptions, old
and modem addresses, and GPS coordinates.
* "Walking Tour of the Elements," which
includes 500 photographs and descriptions of
all elements, minerals of discovery, and other
interesting facts. These photographs were taken
from the authors' private collections.
* Biographies of all scientists involved in the
Rediscovery history.
* Reissue of all HEXAGON articles in the
Rediscovery series (so far, about 30), with
expansions and revisions where research has
uncovered new information.
Coverage will include all countries (25) asso-
ciated with the discovery of the elements in
South and North America and Europe.
Garmin International, Inc. has agreed to
allow the use of their maps for a not-for-profit
enterprise. Proceeds of the DVD will be donat-
ed to the Alpha Chi Sigma Educational
Foundation.
As an example of the expanded coverage,
"The Grand Tour"will include 100 photographs,
accompanied by detailed captions and expand-
ed text pertaining to "Martin Heinrich
Klaproth,"the subject of the"Rediscovery of the
Elements" in the Summer 2008 issue of The
HEXAGON. In this HEXAGON article on
Klaproth, space restrictions allowed only 15
photographs, and many historical paintings,
photographs, and buildings could not be
included.
One can casually wander through the coun-
tries experiencing the Rediscovery process as an
armchair traveler or, in a more scholastic vein,
can use the carefully prepared computer links
to navigate efficiently from elements to scien-
tists to geographical sites to maps. This dynam-
ic learning tool should thus prove to be espe-
cially valuable for teachers wanting resource
material for their classes.
Anticipated publication date: late 2009 or
early 2010. Projected cost: $75. Educational dis-
counts will be available for quantity purchases.

projects by the authors can be perused at
