lished in World War II as the first solid
propellant laboratory in the U. S.
Thompson joined North American Avi-
ation, Inc., in 1954 to supervise research
in propellant chemistry. He became Rock-
etdyne's director of research in 1964 and
was named director of science and tech-
nology programs earlier this year.
Rocketdyne's Solid Rocket division has
produced approximately 146,000 solid
rocket motors for the Air Force, Navy
and NASA in the last 15 years.
Currently, the division is performing
production and /or production support
programs on the Sparrow, Shrike and
Phoenix missiles and other solid rocket
motor programs.
North American Rockwell, the 30th
largest industrial corporation in the
United States, is a major producer of
automotive components, industrial ma-
chinery, advanced electronics, aerospace
systems, civilian and military aircraft
and fiber glass products. It has major
strength in research and development,
systems engineering and a growing po-
sition in a number of the emerging in-
dustries and in international markets.

Kenneth Bird, professor and head of
the environmental department at Texas
State Technical Institute spoke to the
Waco Branch of the American Associa-
tion of University Women recently.
Bird discussed the evolution of various
methods for controlling water pollution
from sewage disposal under the subject,
"This Beleaguered Earth-Can Man Sur-
vive ?"
He said that if solid wastes are burned,
the air is polluted; but if they are al-
lowed to remain in place then the water
is polluted. He believes that if wastes are
converted into liquids they can be used
