C. E. MILLER and J. D. REYNOLDS Of
the Eng. Chem. Lab. have recently sub-
mitted a paper for publication entitled
"Modification of Beckman KF-3 Aqua-
meter Adapted to Determination of Water
in JP-4 fuel." Essentially the modification
allows the introduction of JP-4 samples
containing water above saturation with
reproducible results within 1-2 ppm.
Error due to H2O separating or adhering
to the container or measuring device has
been eliminated.
H. J. WELTMAN Of the Eng. Chem.
Lab. who is Leadman of the Fluids and
Lubricants Group has been promoted to
Senior Engineering Chemist.
E. W. TURNS and M. E. BROWNINGhave been doing extensive research on high
temperature refractory metal alloys and
electrodeposition. Several patents have
been applied for on the processes.
Sherman Adult College-T. M. Lair
The Sherman Adult Education College
of Four States Co-operative University is
offering a new Industrial Extension Pro-
gram which should be of interest to all
chemists.
This program is designed to help the
mature adult who is employed as a chem-
ist, engineer, or other technical employee
but lacks college credits to complete his
degree. It allows this person to use his
company's or his own laboratory facilities
in a guided study program to earn college
credit toward basic or advanced degrees.
The program can be most helpful to
persons who are too busy to attend classes
but are mature enough to study and learn
with a minimum of formal instruction.Pemi s44i Sectio,

OFFICERS: Chairman: Jesse Looney. Chairman-elect: Thomas L. McGinnis. Secretary: Roy Hendrickson.
Treasurer: Jim Hudson. Councilors: Lawrence Sperberg, Birt Allison.New officers were introduced and mem-
bers of the Permian Basin section of the
American Chemical Society heard DR.
RAYMOND B. SEYMOUR speak on modern
polymer chemistry Thursday.
The organization met in the Cosden
Country Club for its regular meeting.
"The first developments in plastics such
as the fabrication of billiard balls from
colloidan and camphor were milestones in
technological achievements. Such achieve-
ments and future applications are of great
practical importance, but they are un-
related to chemical science," Dr. Seymour
said.
He pointed to the work of Dr. Leo
Baekeland and Dr. Wallace Carothers. He

ethylene and butadiene rubber by the hot
process were acceptable during the war,
but the product was far from satisfactory.
"Today, the chemist can control struc-
ture of the end product through the use
of polymer chemistry," Seymour said. He
discussed the chemical relationship of
fiber, rubber and plastics.
He noted that this process is comparable
to that in other fields. He said U. S.
plastics production this year will exceed
six billion pounds.
"And with new knowledge of polymer
chemistry, an annual production in excess
of 10 billion pounds may be anticipated,"
he explained.
RAYMOND B. SEYMOUR joined the
American Chemical Society in 1932 and
has been an active member of nine differ-
ent sections of this society. He was sec-
retary (1942-4) and chairman elect of
the Dayton Section (1945), National
Councillor of the Chattanooga sectionSOUTHWEST RETORT
