This non-profit organization engages
in basic research in biomedicine and is
becoming a world authority in the study
of atherosclerosis-a study in which the
baboon, the only animal known to man to
naturally develop hardening of the arter-
ies, is used as the test animal.
A sister organization is the Southwest
Research Institute, located adjacent to the
Foundation. A not-for-profit organiza-
tion, SwRI is engaged in basic and applied
research for government and industry in
the general fields of chemistry and chem-
ical engineering; engines, fuels and lubri-
cants; engineering mechanics; electrical
engineering; industrial economics; mineral
technology; and physics.
Of particular interest to convention
delegates are the activities of the Insti-
tute's Departments of Chemical Research
and Chemical Engineering, headed up,
respectively, by Drs. William E. Thomp-
son and Eugene P. Whitlow, both active
members of ACS.
General areas of research are air and
water pollution which includes the much
publicized Houston Air Pollution Survey;
organic chemistry, including modern pilot
plant preparation of an exotic new fuel;
propellants-in which propellant special-
ists, working with physical and analytical
chemists are surveying present test meth-
ods for the evaluation of solid propellants
as well as the manufacture of chlorate
and perchlorate compounds; and chemical
engineering which includes outstanding
four absorption gas refrigeration cycle
units.
