the type 304 stainless steel tubing used in the instrumented fuel assem-
blies. Eleven elements with dual thermocouples and eight with single
thermocouples were evaluated. Of the eight single-thermocouple elements,
five contained little, if any, nonbonding, with nonbonded areas less than
5/8 in. in length. Two others had nonbonded areas 7/8 and 1 1/8 in. in
length, respectively, and the eighth had 757 of the approximate 4 1/2-in.
total length nonbonded. Seven of the dual-therm.ocouple elements had only
minor (less than 1/2-in.-long) nonbonded areas in both joints. One joint
had a 3/4-in.-long nonbonded area and three of the elements were found
to have large continuous nonbonded areas. After attempts to rebraze two
of the latter, one was still unbonded; the other had only minor nonbonded
areas remaining.
Evaluation of a Vapor-Phase Corrosion Inhibitor
B. Fleischer
A vapor-phase corrosion inhibitor, VPI-260, is being considered for
protection of EGCR components during storage. The possibility that the
inhibitor might get into the reactor prompted an investigation of the
effects it could have during operation.
A nitrite vapor-phase corrosion inhibitor differs from the nitrite
corrosion inhibitors used in ordinary water systems primarily in the
method in which the inhibitor is brought to the surfaces to be ,protected.
The vapor-phase inhibitor is distributed by the processes of volatiliza-
tion, diffusion to, and adsorption on the metal surfaces. Water that
subsequently comes into contact with the surface dissolves the inhibitor,
and protection is provided in the same manner as in a conventional water-
metal system.
